GOODS FROM NATURE- Nourishing Body Oil

GPB GFN Body Oil

Goods From Nature

Goods From Nature was founded when Abby, the founder, was in college she started buying more natural products and thought she would try to make her own.  After making her own products and getting amazing reviews from her friends and family she took the leap and Goods From Nature was born.  Abby’s goal is to help others choose natural products instead of commercially produced products with synthetic chemicals.  Good From Nature has a variety of products in their shop, such as Hand & Body Balm, Gift Sets, Skin Healing Salve, Hydrating Botanical Mist, Sunscreen, Bug Spray, Face Oil and Organic Linen & Pillow Case Shams.  Also, you can try samples sizes of all of her natural products.  Goods From Nature wants to:

Nourish your skin and reduce your chemical load, one product at a time.

When Abby reached out to me to try her products, I told her I would be honored to try her body oil.  I adore body oils!  So let’s start looking at the Goods From Nature Body Oil.

GPB Goods from Nature

Nourishing Body Oil $30

If you know me, you know I’m always using body oils.  Definitely what my dry body needs all year round.  This body oil is so lovely with a spicy, nutty smell.  I like to use on wet skin after getting out of the shower or bath.  The oil soaks in, leaving skin smooth and hydrated without a greasy feeling.  Goods From Nature uses safer ingredients including:

  • Organic Jojoba Oil
  • Organic Rosehip Seed Oil
  • Organic Coconut Oil
  • Unrefined Shea Butter
  • Organic Tamanu Oil
  • Organic Borage Oil
  • Organic Amaranth Oil
  • Palmarosa EO
  • Ginger Grass EO
  • Nutmeg EO
  • Clove EO
    • After researching all the ingredients I reached out to Abby about Skin Deep’s Rating of 5 for clove essential oil, she informed me that she uses a very small amount in her body oil and is safe to use as long as someone doesn’t have an allergy to it.

GPB Bottom Line

This is a lovely body oil, that leaves skin feeling soft and silky, not greasy.  I can’t wait to try more products.  Have you tried any of Goods From Nature products?  I love to support indie beauty brands.  I will leave you with something Abby said about the Green Beauty Movement and I feel the same way about being a part of it:

The green indie beauty industry is growing and evolving and I am so excited to be a part of this awesome movement. And I’m deeply grateful to be able to join a community of women encouraging and supporting each other as we all make better choices for our health and our natural beauty.

Have you heard about Rejuva Minerals  and that they have some of their cosmetics MADE SAFE certified?  So excited to share with you what MADE SAFE certification means and Rejuva Minerals MADE SAFE products.  MADE SAFE is America’s first nontoxic seal for products we use everyday, from baby to personal care to household and beyond.  This means that Rejuva Minerals products with MADE SAFE certification has had every ingredient screened for safety, by also checking the supply chain to rule out potential contamination.  The MADE SAFE seal plays an important role in a world where so many products on the market are made with potentially toxic ingredients, even when they claim to be natural or organic (crazy, right??).  Thankfully, we can educate ourselves, read labels and now look for the MADE SAFE seal to make sure the products we’re using do not contain all those toxic ingredients in them.

MADE SAFE stands for “Made with Safe Ingredients”.  When products acquire the MADE SAFE seal you know those products are made with ingredients that are not known or suspected to cause human health harm or ecosystem harm as determined by scientifically recognized lists from around the world.  To find out more about the MADE SAFE process check out their site and also see my blog post about MADE SAFE here.

I was thrilled when I first heard of MADE SAFE because they want to change the way products are made in this country and make them healthier (me too!!!).  Wouldn’t it be nice if you could walk in a store, buy something off the shelf and know that it is safe to use?   Now we may not be able to do that yet (wishful thinking), but we can look for the MADE SAFE seal and know that product is made with safe ingredients.

You might see different variations of the MADE SAFE seal on products depending on package size-see pictures below.

What the MADE SAFE Seal Means image

When MADE SAFE asked me if I would like to try some MADE SAFE products every few months and share my thoughts on Green Passion Beauty, you better believe I jumped at the chance to help spread the word about safe products and MADE SAFE.  I’ve already tried a few other MADE SAFE products like Kosmatology and Natracare (future posts on these coming soon) and can’t wait to try more.  Now let’s get on to the beautiful, natural brand called Rejuva Minerals and the gorgeous MADE SAFE products they sent me that I’ve been using.

Rejuva Minerals

GPB Rejuva Minerals 1

Rejuva Minerals was founded by Brenda Hyre in 2006, as a health and wellness advocate with sensitive skin she knew that safer high quality products made without all the potential harmful ingredients was missing from the market place.  So she created Rejuva Minerals Inc. with the help of a team of chemists, make-up artists and her partner/co-founder Troy Hyre.

Not only are their products safe, effective, they carry a wide variety of Rejuva Minerals products, from skin care to cosmetics, some are MADE SAFE certified, EWG Verified, earth friendly and they’re affordable.  What more can one ask for?

Ultra Sheer Multi Task Powder 15.8 gm. Sifter Jar~$29.95

GPB Rejuva Multi

This natural powder is definitely a multi-tasking beauty.  Seriously, this is one of my favorites.  I adore safe products that can be used for so many things, from a primer, to finish, and also as dry shampoo (yes- a dry shampoo).  The powder has a light yummy chocolate scent thanks to the cocoa.  It has a beige/pink color, but goes on sheer, giving a semi-matte finish and feels lightweight.  This goes on after my serums and moisturizer.  When I wear as a primer or finish I apply the powder all over with Rejuva Mineral’s soft High Def Buki Brush.  The brush is so silky soft and makes application of the powder effortless.  Plus, it makes my skin look and feel smooth and natural.  I also like to use as a finish, after applying my serum/moisturizer then foundation or after a work out to get that shine free look.

The Multi-task powder works as a dry shampoo too.  I add a little bit of the powder to my roots with the Rejuva Minerals Flat Top Buki Brush and it blends in great (I have shoulder length blonde/light brown hair).

GPB Rejuva Made Safe multi

Love the natural look with the safe ingredients like Cocoa, Lauroyl Lysine (amino acid), Boron Nitride (derived from natural mineral), Certified Organic Casaba, Kaolin, Certified Organic Blueberry, Certified Organic Grape, and Certified Organic Raspberry

This can last a long time, however, there are no preservatives so Rejuva Minerals recommends replacement after one year.  Rejuva Minerals also has a trial size 1 gm Multi Task Powder for $5.99, which is great to test to make sure the product works for you or if you want a travel size on the go.  I’m taking this multi-purpose powder with me on my next trip-make-up plus dry shampoo, yes please!

Mineral Concealer Loose Powder $34.99

GPB Rejuva Minerals Concealer Loose Powder

I’ve been using the Mineral Concealer Loose Powder in Natural.  This works well with neutral, light-medium skin tones.   I use it under my eyes to cover my dark circles (probably due to lack of sleep) and for little red spots or blemishes.  I like to use the Rejuva Minerals Petit Face Brush to apply to the areas I need a little extra help.  It blends in, covers without bringing attention to the area.  Makes it look natural and skin is still breathable.  This is designed to help conceal minor blemishes, rosacea and other skin conditions.

GPB Rejuva Made Safe Concealer

Ingredients include:  Baron Nitride (derived from natural mineral), Kaolin (clay), Certified Organic Carnauba Powder, Certified Organic Blueberry and Grape, Iron Oxides

This also comes in a trial/travel size 1 gm. Natural Concealer for $5.99 and for warm, light-medium skin tones in Golden Sand.

Natural Look Pressed Foundation Trial Size $10.99

GPB Rejuva Pressed Foundation

I received the shades Nude, Sand and Glow to figure out what color works best for my light skin.  These are eco-friendly, biodegradable compacts that fit easily in my bag.  Love the silky smooth, natural finish it provides.  I do have to make sure that I have my serum and moisturizer on before applying this to my dry skin.  The pressed foundation is buildable.  For a light coverage I use the Buki Brush to apply the pressed foundation all over.  When I want more coverage I use the Rejuva Minerals Puff that comes with it.

I really like the way these make my skin look when I want more coverage.  If you know me and as I said before, love me some trial sizes to travel with or to test out what shade works best.  Rejuva Minerals also has Trial Pressed Powder where you buy two and get one free.

Make-up brushes

GPB Rejuva brushes

Top -High Def Buki, Middle-Flat Top Buki, Bottom-Petit Face

I’m not a make-up expert, but know that the right tools really make a difference with make-up application.   I’ve been using the High Def BukiFlat Top BukiPetit Face brushes I received and they are fabulous.  They are vegan friendly with synthetic hair, soft bristles, manufactured exclusively for Rejuva Minerals by an environmentally sensitive USA manufacturer who supports the fight against animal testing.  Not only, are these cruelty free, the handles are made from sustainable wood.

If you can’t tell, I’m so impressed with Rejuva Minerals high quality, effective, beautiful, eco-friendly (even their boxes are made from 50% recycled material) and MADE SAFE certified products.  Not only does Rejuva Minerals take extra steps to ensure safe ingredients are in their products, they are affordable too.

Have you tried anything from Rejuva Minerals?  What should I try next?  I want to try everything now.

If you want to try Rejuva Minerals look for their travel/trial sizes and starter kits, which are helpful when you’re new to natural beauty or trying to figure out the right shade and product for your skin.

Can’t wait to see what Rejuva Minerals and MADE SAFE do in the future to make our products safe.  If ingredient safety is important to you, check out Rejuva Minerals, please continue to read labels and look for the MADE SAFE seal.

Lifestyle/Eco Fashion, Subscription Boxes

GPB Back to Basics Box 1

If you know me, you know I adore a good green beauty subscription box, however, there aren’t very many home or lifestyle boxes out there.  So when I saw Back to Basics I knew I had to try it.  Finding effective home alternatives to conventional products has been a long process and I’m still working on it.  I’m on a constant search for the right eco-home products.  Enter some help with the Back to Basics, which includes clean products for home/lifestyle plus green beauty, yes please!!!.

Back to Basics was founded by Ashleigh a homeopath and wellness expert with the intention:

To make the world aware of how the toxins that are in most consumer products can affect you…and your sister…and your babysitter…and your boss…and your dog…and well, everyone!

Ashleigh wondered why everyone was so sick from their environment and set out to bring awareness to improve health and eliminate all the toxic products that are destroying everyones wellbeing.  She’s hoping to get us back to the basics with cleaner, greener products one Back to Basics box at a time.

Back to Basics has a few monthly subscription boxes to choose from, the Eco Chic Chica, which includes carefully curated, researched and tested products by Ashleigh.  This box is $29.99 plus shipping and includes 4 products: 2 women’s beauty/body/skincare products + 2 home/cleaning products.  The second box is the Go Green Gent- a box for men with 2 men’s body/self-care products + 2 home/cleaning products for $29.99 plus shipping.   Lastly, the Household Combo with a total of 6 products: 2 women’s + 2 men’s + 2 home/cleaning products for $45.99 plus shipping.  I purchased the Eco Chic Chica box, but I might have to try out the Household Combo to get some clean products for the hubs.  Find out more about the monthly subscription boxes here.  Plus every product comes with an information card comparing the safer alternative to conventional products, pro tips, information about the ingredients and or product.  Did I mention they also have a shop to buy the products they feature in their monthly box?

Now onto my first Back to Basics box-it comes with different compartments for the products and the information cards inside.  So organized!!!

Herbivore Blue Tansy $48

GPB BTB Blue Tansy all

GPB RTB Blue Tansy

Look at this beautiful Blue Tansy Resurfacing Mask.  This is soothing and anti-inflammatory made from blue tansy oil, fruit enzymes, and white willow bark.  This is my second jar of Blue Tansy, but it felt like the first time I tried this because it was so long ago and this time I made sure to follow Herbivore’s directions and tip card (how about that?  Following directions works!!!).   This product alone was more than the price of the box, making everything else a bonus, you know what I mean?  I used it for 3-4 days in a row (per directions), applied a thin layer with the spatula included, and kept on for about 15-20 minutes each time.   It felt cooling and a little tingle when I first applied, but then the sensation went away.  I noticed smoother skin after the initial masking and now I just use it once a week with great results.  Have you tried this mask? I can’t get over the color-so lovely and the light sweet/herbal aroma.

Truce Clean – Wood Cleaner $7.55

GPB BTB TruceGPB BTB Truce ingredients

This citrusy smelling wood cleaner can be used daily as a dusting spray on all types of surfaces or for a deeper clean on wood surfaces.  It’s working on all my wood furniture and it’s made with safe ingredients like Olive Oil, Essential Oils (citrus & lemon), Distilled White Vinegar, and Guar Gum.  I just had to add water to the bottle and then the spray cleaner was ready to go-simple!   It does need to be mixed up prior to using and every few minutes when using.  Overall, I really like the wood cleaner and refills are available or the bottle can be recycled when it’s gone.

Full Circle Pulp Friction Dusting Cloths $4.99

GPB BTB Dusting Cloths

GPB BTB Dust full

These are made from 100% natural plant based pulp & non-toxic dyes.  They are thick, soft, and work great to dust surfaces, including wood and electronics.  Plus they are machine washable.  These are such a great find and affordable!

Essential Oxygen Brushing Rinse $4.60

GPB BTB Brushing Rinse peppermint

GPB BTB Rinse back of bottle

The Essential Oxygen Brushing Rinse is described as part toothpaste and part mouthwash.  It is a clear liquid with a light peppermint taste.   It’s made with clean and organic ingredients to whiten teeth, for fresher breath and much more.   I like to use it as a mouthwash.  It makes my teeth feel clean and keeps them white.

So impressed with my first Back to Basics box.  It was full of clean home products I haven’t used before that are affordable and effective, plus green beauty.   If you’re looking for a combo box with green beauty and eco-home/lifestyle products Back to Basics is one of the few out there.  I can’t wait to see everything in the April box.  What did you think?  Are you subscribed?  Any products you hope to see in a future box?  Please share in comments-thank you.

Fitglow Beauty -Vita-Set Kit

I’ve been using Fitglow Beauty for a few years now and I can confidently say they are one of my favorite green beauty brands.  So first, let’s start by talking about the amazing woman behind the Canadian cruelty-free line- Anna.  Just follow her on Fitglow’s Instagram and you will see this gorgeous woman giving us a glimpse of her world, concocting effective clean beautiful products and making sure women know it is not about perfection, it’s about feeling confident in their skin.

The Vita Active Foundation is my must have foundation.  I’m pretty fair to light with some red undertones (I also wear the Redness Rescue Cream – more on that another day) so VF2 works for me.  VF2 is Light/Warm, it gives me medium coverage, blends right into the skin.  Vita-Active Foundation comes in many shades-VF1-VF7 so the right shade can be found for many skin tones.

I still remember when I first used the foundation, every time I looked in the mirror I couldn’t believe my skin was silky smooth and looked natural too (should I say-flawless).  When Fitglow came out with the VITA-SET KIT  which includes the Vita-Active Foundation, Vita-Active Set Powder & Limited Edition Handmade cosmetic bag (I’m a collector of everything Fitglow Beauty and the bags, you might call me the Fitglow bag lady?!?!), I knew I would have to get it.   The Vita-Set Kit is $129.   To me the cost is well worth the products inside, they are not just make-up, they are an extension of my skin care.  You can also buy the products separately- Vita-Active Foundation and Vita-Set Powder).

 Vita-Active Foundation

This is a creamy foundation that I like to apply with my fingers.  I use one to two pumps to cover my entire face.  You can also use a foundation brush, natural sponge, which I have, but my favorite is using my fingers with this formula because it feels like a moisturizer and blends in so smoothly.  This foundation works in the Texas humidity, cold, and crazy weather.  It feels light weight but gives coverage and stays on all day.

Back of Vita-Active Foundation

This plant- based foundation contains clean ingredients and scores a Zero with Think Dirty, meaning it has no nasty ingredients in it.  Plus, Vita-Active feels like skin care make-up because it contains a blend of some proven super foods and essential vitamins like Vitamin C, Botanical Hyaluronic Acid, Seaweed Brighteners, and Beta-Carotene.  Who doesn’t want their make-up to be effective, but also benefit their skin?

For a full list of ingredients see here.

Vita-Set Powder

GPB FItglow VIta Set

I didn’t think my skin could look any better, but it does with the Vita-Set Powder.  It adds a finished look, shrinks pores, smooths the skin and blends with foundation for long lasting wear.  I apply the powder after my Vita-Active Foundation.  It can be used to set foundation, balance oils and protects from environmental stressors.  It is made with clean ingredients like Canadian Glacial Marine Clay- rich in minerals that soothe skin and protect from the environment, Zinc Oxide (Non-nano), and Niacinamide (B3).

For a full list of ingredients see here.

Handmade Beauty Bag

The handmade bags come with the Limited Edition sets, can be purchased separately or in the Fitglow Try Me Bag.  They are unique and beautiful (I’ve tried to get them all).  They are great to travel with and leave in my purse to hold all my Fitglow goodies.

The combination of Vita-Active Foundation and Vita-Set Powder is the best clean beauty foundation and powder I’ve found for my skin.   If you follow me on IG you know my love for Fitglow Beauty runs deep, they have so many of my favorite products- both make-up and skin care (I’m working on more posts now).  Have you tried Fitglow Beauty Vita-Active products?  What did you think?  Any questions please let me know in the comments.  Thank you.

No More Harmful Ingredients with Made Safe Certification

Wouldn’t it be great if we could just buy products off the shelf and not have to worry about them containing any harmful ingredients?   This should be the norm, unfortunately it is not.  Until all products on the market are made without potentially harmful ingredients we have to be diligent about what is in our products.  This is where MADE SAFE  comes in.  Have you heard of MADE SAFE certification?

MADE SAFE (Made with Safe Ingredients) is the first non-profit organization that provides certification that non-toxic products such as baby to personal care to household products and beyond are safe.  Amy Ziff, the founder of MADE SAFE, wanted to change the way products are made in the country- without harmful ingredients and believes together we can shift the market with our choices and demand for safer products.  In our world of so many products that are believed to be clean or made without harmful ingredients, this certification allows us to see the seal and know that we are really getting clean products.

I would love it if all of our products were just safe period.  No question that we could go into any store anywhere and know that the ingredients and products were safe, tested and clean.  For now we can read labels, and look for MADE SAFE seals to ensure products are clean, without toxic ingredients.

MADE SAFE Certified products are made without known harmful chemicals.  That means MADE SAFE Certified products are made without behavioral toxins, carcinogens, Genetically Modified Organism (GMOs), developmental toxins, endocrine disruptors, neurotoxins, high risk pesticides, reproductive toxins, heavy metals and harmful Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).

MADE SAFE Certification Process

MADE SAFE  believes that we should all have access to every ingredient in the products we use.  Me too!  What about you?  Brands under certification must disclose all their ingredients for the MADE SAFE seal.  Also, by December 31, 2017 MADE SAFE will require full public disclosure of fragrance ingredients.  Let’s think about why a company wouldn’t want us to have information about their ingredients.  Are they really afraid someone will make the same exact product available (maybe) or do they have something to hide (maybe)?  Are there unsafe ingredients lurking in their products?  Bottom line, be transparent about ingredients and then we can make a knowledgeable decision whether to use the products.

MADE SAFE does look forward to the day that their seals are no longer necessary:

When all products are made from safe ingredients; when enough is known about how chemicals react in mixture that we may trust that products are being formulated safely. Until then, our seals are well defined in order to end the confusion over what you are buying and how it has been made and vetted.

Just look for the MADE SAFE seal, like on the back of Annmarie Gianni Skin Care products because they are certified MADE SAFE.

There is a fee to get the MADE SAFE seal/certification.  Companies can request pricing based on a sliding scale depending on if the company wants certification or other services like ingredient diligence.

True Botanicals was one of the first to receive the MADE SAFE certification.  They indicated:

As makers (and of course consumers) of skin care products with higher standards, we’re grateful for the level of confidence MADE SAFE Certified now gives us all. Their work creates a definitive line in the sand for our claim-loving industry. From now on, either a product is or is not MADE SAFE.

What do you think?  Do you like the idea of a MADE SAFE seal?  Please remember there are amazing products out there that already use a high standard for clean ingredients, but they do not have the certification.   Continue to look at labels and buy these wonderful safer products, as well as products with the MADE SAFE seal.

How you spend your money is how you vote on what exists in the world

~Vicki Robin

What products do you want to see with the MADE SAFE Seal?

I actually sent an email to Disney to see if they would be interested in making their products for children, like make-up, lipstick, lip balm with clean ingredients (by the way my family loves Disney/Disneyworld).  As a mom and concerned consumer I think it would be wonderful if Disney, who essentially markets to us through our children (and the child in all of us) would take the lead and make it a priority to make sure all their products are not made with potentially harmful ingredients (like talc and parabens) and be one of the first with the MADE SAFE certification (full post coming soon, but at this point I’ve only received an email back from customer service indicating they are sending it to someone that can answer my questions).

Please leave comments below about brands/products you would love to see with the MADE SAFE seal and you can also go here to MADE SAFE and suggest brands.  How incredible would it be if all our products were MADE SAFE?  Remember, until every product on the market is made without toxic ingredients you can read labels, avoid the ones with nasty ingredients, and look for the MADE SAFE seal.

Organic Bunny Box-hello glamorous girl with a green heart

Organic Bunny Box

The Organic Bunny Box is the love passion/brain child of The Organic Bunny, Amanda Jo.  Most people have heard of this amazing green beauty advocate and follow her on Instagram  (that’s how I found her) and been to her blog The Organic Bunny for great tips on organic, green beauty, safer products and reviews, if not go find her now.  Thank goodness she ventured into the subscription box world.  Seriously one of the best out there if you’re looking for safe glamorous and everyday beauty (and believe me I’ve tried so many subscription boxes-my husband would say too many).

What’s in the box???  According to Organic Bunny:

Once a month The Organic Bunny Box delivers Non-Toxic, Natural and Organic beauty products conveniently to your door. Each box contains 6-8 products in medium to full sizes, some smaller samples may be included as extra goodies. We are not fans of small samples so rest assured, the items in this box will be big enough to provide you with the full product experience!

All products are Cruelty-Free, over 98% Natural, always Non-Toxic and made with Organic ingredients as frequently as possible. I will always try to provide an amazing mix of items, including but not limited to: Natural makeup, perfume, skin and body care, with occasional healthy treats and eco-friendly products.

I’ve been subscribed to Organic Bunny Box since December 2015 and have been incredibly impressed.  Not only are there products that I’ve wanted to try but products/brands I didn’t know existed and are so good.  Also, love the glamourous eco-chic boxes they come in and the bag for September month.   I use these boxes to store my make-up, journals/cards, products and also to give as gifts with clean goodies inside.  I decided to write about all the Organic Bunny Boxes I’ve received with mini reviews (you might see a more detailed monthly review soon or for future boxes).  I know when I’m trying to decide if I want to subscribe to a box I look at previous months, so I wanted to make it easy for you to see everything offered in the Organic Bunny Box each month in one spot.  I’ve only missed the first 2 months (insert sad face here).

The pricing varies depending on what subscription you pick- for monthly subscription it is $59 and you save some money if you opt for the 3 month subscription for $167 or 6 month subscription for $330.  Click here for more details.

Can you see why The Organic Bunny Box is one of my favorite clean beauty subscription boxes and one of Thoughtfully Magazine’s Top 6?  Such a great variety of clean beauty/clean living products and fabulous value.  Some of the products I couldn’t determine the exact value, but you can see the approximate value of each product and each box was well over the $59 per month cost.  As a subscription box collector, I know that some months are going to be better than others and that is what you should except with any subscription box.  But overall, I’m always happy with this glamorous box, plus I can use everything in them.  The Organic Bunny Box would make a great Holiday/Birthday/Self care gift for someone new to clean beauty or the green beauty enthusiast.   Do you subscribe?  What was your favorite Organic Bunny Box month?  Do you want to see monthly (more detailed) reviews?  Please leave comments below.  Thank you.

October is Breast Cancer awareness month.  I think it is wonderful to raise awareness/prevention education and to donate to a cause like breast cancer.  However, when brands/products contain the harmful ingredients that are actually linked to breast cancer then there is a problem.  This is why Breast Cancer Action invented the term pink washing as part of their Think Before You Pink Campaign.

Pinkwasher (noun)

A company or organization that claims to care about breast cancer by promoting a pink ribbon product, but at the same time produces with, manufactures and/or sells products that are linked to the disease.

This seems crazy, that companies trying to raise money for breast cancer actually contain chemicals/ingredients that may cause cancer or been linked to cancer.  What?!?!?  If you do by the products please be aware of what harmful, possibly cancer causing ingredients might be in those products.  Breast Cancer Fund wants consumers to ask questions like:

Does this purchase put you or someone you love at risk for exposure to toxins linked to breast cancer?  What is the company doing to ensure that its products are not contributing to the breast cancer epidemic?

In considering a pink ribbon purchase, does the product contain toxins or otherwise increase our risk of breast cancer?

These are great questions to ask prior to buying the product with the pink ribbon.  Just another reason why it is so important to know what ingredients are harmful and how to avoid them or make the decision that they are acceptable for you and your family.   So what can we do?  Demand safer products.  Plus, continue to check ingredients and also see resources like the October Shopping Guide by The Breast Cancer Fund that included brands/products that are safe and transparent about what is in their products (Beauty Counter, Dr. Brite, Tata Harper and more).

The Breast Cancer Fund campaign is also working to shift the focus from awareness to prevention and to stop the disease before it starts.

According to The Breast Cancer Fund, in just a generation we’ve witnessed a 40-percent increase in breast cancer, and we know that environmental factors like toxic chemical exposures have played a major role. The Breast Cancer Fund is working to eliminate our exposure to toxic chemicals linked to the disease so that fewer of us, our daughters and increasingly our sons will ever have to hear the words, “You have breast cancer.”

It would be a wonderful world if we could trust that every product on the market was safe with no toxic, cancer causing ingredients.  Especially, products with pink ribbons on them should be clean.  Until then, we need to continue to look into the ingredients and decide if the product is one that we are comfortable using for ourselves and our families.

Legislation/Take Action

What can you do and how to Take Action

What can you do to ensure your products are safe to use for you and your family?

  • Education-first, educate yourself on what ingredients you should stay away from in beauty and personal care products.  Even if the product or someone says it is natural, organic, green please check the ingredient list.  I have purchased products that I thought were natural or didn’t contain toxic materials because of the claims they made and later found out their products had harmful ingredients in them.
  • Share information with your family and friends.  Just realize some people may not want to hear what you have to say.  I’ve talked to a few people that I was shocked by their responses (I won’t name any names).  I’ve heard things like “well everything can hurt you/causes cancer” or “it’s such a small amount of the ingredient it really doesn’t matter” or “I’m too old it doesn’t matter any more.”  My response?  I try to explain as much as I can but let them know it is their decision, but this is what I’m doing for me and my family.
  • Don’t buy toxic products.  There are so many safer, affordable options out there now.
    • How you spend your money is how you vote on what exists in the world~ Vicki Robin
  • Discuss your concerns about certain products with the company/manufacturer.  Email them, ask them questions on Instagram or social media.  Hopefully, the company/manufacturer will answer your question and be transparent about what ingredients are in their products.
  • Write to your senator, legislator about your concerns.

Here are some amazing resources and companies that are spearheading the way to make our products safer.  Please click on links to find out more information:

Breast Cancer Fund:  The Breast Cancer Fund works to connect the dots between breast cancer and exposures to chemicals and radiation in our everyday environments.  The Breast Cancer Fund works to prevent breast cancer by eliminating our exposure to toxic chemicals and radiation linked to the disease.

Campaign for Safe Cosmetics– The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics coalition, a project of the Breast Cancer Fund, works to protect the health of consumers, workers and the environment through public education and engagement, corporate accountability and sustainability campaigns and legislative advocacy designed to eliminate dangerous chemicals linked to adverse health impacts from cosmetics and personal care products.

Clean Beauty Revolution Au Naturale Cosmetics started the movement for the #cleanbeautyrevolution asking for stricter legislation.  Specifically, they are asking law makers to make cosmetics safe by creating the Clean Beauty Standard that will protect consumers against harsh chemicals, beginning with required ingredient transparency. This means clear and accountable labelling of all cosmetic products.  You can also read my post about it here.

EWG The Environmental Working Group is a non-profit organization.   The EWG’s mission is to empower people to live healthier lives in a healthier environment. With breakthrough research and education to drive consumer choice and civic action.

Made Safe is a non-profit organization that provides America’s first comprehensive human health-focused certification for nontoxic products across store aisles, from baby to personal care to household and beyond. Their goal is to change the way products are made in this country to ultimately eliminate the use of toxic chemicals altogether.

Think Dirty is a mobile application “Think Dirty® app is the easiest way to learn about the potentially toxic ingredients in your cosmetics and personal care products. Just scan the product barcode and Think Dirty will give you easy-to-understand info on the product, its ingredients, and shop cleaner options!”

These are just some of the references I use when researching ingredients/products and I will add more as the green beauty community movement continues.

What’s not to love about this 100% organic, T-shirt colloboration to support the Breast Cancer Fund and their project, the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics.  This is an exclusive, limited edition Tee made in the US.

With every purchase of the limited edition T-shirt Tata Harper will donate $30 to the Breast Cancer Fund’s Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, raising awareness about harmful ingredients in personal care products and advocating for legislation that protects our health.

This T-shirt is ultra soft and so adorable on.   It has a scoop neck and back making it a chic T-shirt.  I love wearing my Kiss Me I’m Non-toxic shirt with jeans, shorts or a skirt.  Who knew a T-shirt could be so sexy and with a mission to spread the word about safe products.

Below is the card that came with the T-shirt.  The front is the beautiful founder Tata Harper wearing the T-shirt and the back has information about how to get involved.

When the limited edition shirt first came out, Tata Harper also donated an additional $1 for every post on social media featuring the shirt or Tata Harper products using #kissmeimnontoxic, up to $10,ooo.  Love it and believe me I used that hashtag as much as I could without being too annoying!

I love this shirt, the mission behind it and Tata Harper.  This luxury limited edition T-shirt is still available at Tata Harper for $85.   Hopefully, one day all of our products will be safe and not cause/contribute to cancer.  Until then I can’t wait to see more amazing collaborations to continue to spread the word about harmful ingredients and where proceeds go to advocates that are trying to protect our health, like the Breast Cancer Fund and the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics.

Hello gorgeous JORD wood watch.  Seriously, I can’t believe how beautiful this watch is.  JORD sent this watch to me to try and I’m loving it.   I forgot how much I adore wearing a watch.  JORD watches are made out of wood from around the world and from recycled furniture remnants.  My green beauty path has made me more aware of everything, from what I wear, eat, clean with, and ultimately buy.   Like this watch, it was important to me that the wood JORD used was eco-conscious and they aren’t cutting down trees to make these beauties.  Plus this is more than a watch, it is a statement piece, jewelry and a timepiece all in one.

JORD is run by artists, designers, marketers, and minders.   They are focused on creating timepieces that are modeled after a modern lifestyle. They value sustainability, efficiency, and experiential living.   The value of a watch is not in being able to tell how much time has passed, but in being aware of the need to make that time count. Moments are bigger than minutes and your watch should tell more than time.

I have the Dark Sandalwood & Mint- Frankie 35 Series, which is so pretty, lightweight, easy to take on/off, and goes with everything.   The pop of mint color on the face with gold hardware gives it a feminine look against the dark wood.  Not only is the watch beautiful, it arrived in the etched wooden box and the watch was wrapped around a burlap pillow.  I really like all the details.  Everything about the watch to the packaging is luxurious.

I haven’t worn a watch for years and forgot how much I missed the feel against my wrist and seeing the movement of the hands.  I really love the quality, design, and that JORD watches are eco-friendly.

I like to wear my JORD wood watch loose-worn alone or with some bracelets.

I’m so excited that I’ve teamed up with JORD for a fabulous CONTEST- The Contest winner gets a $75 e-gift code to their shop where you can pick out your own stunning watch style.  The winner will be automatically selected and emailed.  Plus everyone wins, just for entering you will receive a $20 e-gift code automatically.   This is so great because they have fabulous men’s and women’s watches that would be great gifts for that special someone or a gift for you.  Just click here to enter the contest.  The contest ends November 13, 2016.  Good luck and check out their beautiful unique eco-conscious wood watches.
