October is Breast Cancer awareness month.  I think it is wonderful to raise awareness/prevention education and to donate to a cause like breast cancer.  However, when brands/products contain the harmful ingredients that are actually linked to breast cancer then there is a problem.  This is why Breast Cancer Action invented the term pink washing as part of their Think Before You Pink Campaign.

Pinkwasher (noun)

A company or organization that claims to care about breast cancer by promoting a pink ribbon product, but at the same time produces with, manufactures and/or sells products that are linked to the disease.

This seems crazy, that companies trying to raise money for breast cancer actually contain chemicals/ingredients that may cause cancer or been linked to cancer.  What?!?!?  If you do by the products please be aware of what harmful, possibly cancer causing ingredients might be in those products.  Breast Cancer Fund wants consumers to ask questions like:

Does this purchase put you or someone you love at risk for exposure to toxins linked to breast cancer?  What is the company doing to ensure that its products are not contributing to the breast cancer epidemic?

In considering a pink ribbon purchase, does the product contain toxins or otherwise increase our risk of breast cancer?

These are great questions to ask prior to buying the product with the pink ribbon.  Just another reason why it is so important to know what ingredients are harmful and how to avoid them or make the decision that they are acceptable for you and your family.   So what can we do?  Demand safer products.  Plus, continue to check ingredients and also see resources like the October Shopping Guide by The Breast Cancer Fund that included brands/products that are safe and transparent about what is in their products (Beauty Counter, Dr. Brite, Tata Harper and more).

The Breast Cancer Fund campaign is also working to shift the focus from awareness to prevention and to stop the disease before it starts.

According to The Breast Cancer Fund, in just a generation we’ve witnessed a 40-percent increase in breast cancer, and we know that environmental factors like toxic chemical exposures have played a major role. The Breast Cancer Fund is working to eliminate our exposure to toxic chemicals linked to the disease so that fewer of us, our daughters and increasingly our sons will ever have to hear the words, “You have breast cancer.”

It would be a wonderful world if we could trust that every product on the market was safe with no toxic, cancer causing ingredients.  Especially, products with pink ribbons on them should be clean.  Until then, we need to continue to look into the ingredients and decide if the product is one that we are comfortable using for ourselves and our families.

Legislation/Take Action

What can you do and how to Take Action

What can you do to ensure your products are safe to use for you and your family?

  • Education-first, educate yourself on what ingredients you should stay away from in beauty and personal care products.  Even if the product or someone says it is natural, organic, green please check the ingredient list.  I have purchased products that I thought were natural or didn’t contain toxic materials because of the claims they made and later found out their products had harmful ingredients in them.
  • Share information with your family and friends.  Just realize some people may not want to hear what you have to say.  I’ve talked to a few people that I was shocked by their responses (I won’t name any names).  I’ve heard things like “well everything can hurt you/causes cancer” or “it’s such a small amount of the ingredient it really doesn’t matter” or “I’m too old it doesn’t matter any more.”  My response?  I try to explain as much as I can but let them know it is their decision, but this is what I’m doing for me and my family.
  • Don’t buy toxic products.  There are so many safer, affordable options out there now.
    • How you spend your money is how you vote on what exists in the world~ Vicki Robin
  • Discuss your concerns about certain products with the company/manufacturer.  Email them, ask them questions on Instagram or social media.  Hopefully, the company/manufacturer will answer your question and be transparent about what ingredients are in their products.
  • Write to your senator, legislator about your concerns.

What’s not to love about this 100% organic, T-shirt colloboration to support the Breast Cancer Fund and their project, the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics.  This is an exclusive, limited edition Tee made in the US.

With every purchase of the limited edition T-shirt Tata Harper will donate $30 to the Breast Cancer Fund’s Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, raising awareness about harmful ingredients in personal care products and advocating for legislation that protects our health.

This T-shirt is ultra soft and so adorable on.   It has a scoop neck and back making it a chic T-shirt.  I love wearing my Kiss Me I’m Non-toxic shirt with jeans, shorts or a skirt.  Who knew a T-shirt could be so sexy and with a mission to spread the word about safe products.

Below is the card that came with the T-shirt.  The front is the beautiful founder Tata Harper wearing the T-shirt and the back has information about how to get involved.

When the limited edition shirt first came out, Tata Harper also donated an additional $1 for every post on social media featuring the shirt or Tata Harper products using #kissmeimnontoxic, up to $10,ooo.  Love it and believe me I used that hashtag as much as I could without being too annoying!

I love this shirt, the mission behind it and Tata Harper.  This luxury limited edition T-shirt is still available at Tata Harper for $85.   Hopefully, one day all of our products will be safe and not cause/contribute to cancer.  Until then I can’t wait to see more amazing collaborations to continue to spread the word about harmful ingredients and where proceeds go to advocates that are trying to protect our health, like the Breast Cancer Fund and the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics.

Hello gorgeous JORD wood watch.  Seriously, I can’t believe how beautiful this watch is.  JORD sent this watch to me to try and I’m loving it.   I forgot how much I adore wearing a watch.  JORD watches are made out of wood from around the world and from recycled furniture remnants.  My green beauty path has made me more aware of everything, from what I wear, eat, clean with, and ultimately buy.   Like this watch, it was important to me that the wood JORD used was eco-conscious and they aren’t cutting down trees to make these beauties.  Plus this is more than a watch, it is a statement piece, jewelry and a timepiece all in one.

JORD is run by artists, designers, marketers, and minders.   They are focused on creating timepieces that are modeled after a modern lifestyle. They value sustainability, efficiency, and experiential living.   The value of a watch is not in being able to tell how much time has passed, but in being aware of the need to make that time count. Moments are bigger than minutes and your watch should tell more than time.

I have the Dark Sandalwood & Mint- Frankie 35 Series, which is so pretty, lightweight, easy to take on/off, and goes with everything.   The pop of mint color on the face with gold hardware gives it a feminine look against the dark wood.  Not only is the watch beautiful, it arrived in the etched wooden box and the watch was wrapped around a burlap pillow.  I really like all the details.  Everything about the watch to the packaging is luxurious.

I haven’t worn a watch for years and forgot how much I missed the feel against my wrist and seeing the movement of the hands.  I really love the quality, design, and that JORD watches are eco-friendly.

I like to wear my JORD wood watch loose-worn alone or with some bracelets.

I’m so excited that I’ve teamed up with JORD for a fabulous CONTEST- The Contest winner gets a $75 e-gift code to their shop where you can pick out your own stunning watch style.  The winner will be automatically selected and emailed.  Plus everyone wins, just for entering you will receive a $20 e-gift code automatically.   This is so great because they have fabulous men’s and women’s watches that would be great gifts for that special someone or a gift for you.  Just click here to enter the contest.  The contest ends November 13, 2016.  Good luck and check out their beautiful unique eco-conscious wood watches.

Hello gorgeous body butter.  I’m definitely a fan of body butters and when I saw this beauty with all the clean ingredients and eco packaging, I knew I had to get my hands on it.  This body butter is exquisite and sexy, yet is safe for the entire family.  I think of it as a creamy whipped treat for the body.

Butter Babes is raw, organic, vegan, and not tested on animals.  Their product was created with the belief that what you put on your skin is just as important as what you put in your body.   That’s why body butter is made with clean ingredients to hydrate, protect, and heal the skin.

Butter Babes Body Butter melts on contact, hence the name BODY BUTTER.   It soothes and hydrates my dry (Texas) skin.  A little goes a long way.  During the day I use a small amount (about the size of a dime) and rub it on my legs and arms for an extra glow.   At night I indulge in a little more for a body mask and wake up to silky soft skin. I like to scoop out the creamy thick butter with a clean spoon (usually bamboo to match the packaging – of course).  The smell is intoxicating, chocolate, sexy cocoa, not too overpowering, and yes it smells good enough to eat.  But don’t do it!  There is even a disclaimer on their website not to eat the yummy butter and enjoy responsibly!

This is a multi-tasking body butter that Butter Babes suggest using as:

  • Daily Moisturizer
  • Before bed for a deep moisturizing body mask treatment
  • After sun bathing to heal and sooth skin
  • Tanning aid

Clean ingredients are so important.  Some products can have so many ingredients and they are difficult to decipher or pronounce.  Thankfully Butter Babes Body Butter is made with safe ingredients and there are only eight (see the list of benefits at ButterBabes):

  • Organic Cacao Butter
  • Organic Virgin Coconut Oil
  • Organic Mango Butter
  • Organic Golden Jojoba Seed Oil
  • Vitamin E Oil
  • Almond Butter
  • Avocado Butter
  • Aloe Butter

I will purchase Butter Babes Body Butter again.  It’s $48 dollars and well worth it.  Right now code GREENPASSION saves you 20% -so if you want to try this dreamy clean body butter now is the time just click here.  Have you tried or want to try please tell me your thoughts in the comments.

Mahalo Skin Care Red My Lips Lip Tint

GPB Red My Lips

Mahalo Skin Care Red My Lips is a gorgeous lip tint with plumping infusion and is for a great cause, The Red My Lips organization.  The moment I saw this beauty I knew I had to have it.  First, Mahalo Skin Care is one of my must have skin care lines and so anything made by them I must get.  Secondly, this was their first make up treat and hello beautiful red, packaging and ingredients.  Third, and most important 20% of proceeds from these luxury clean lip tint goes to the Red My Lips organization.  Seriously, everything about this is exquisite.

“Mahalo Skin Care created The Red My Lips Tint from their passion for social causes, clean beauty, and desire to give back.”

I didn’t know about this campaign until Maryna of Mahalo Skin Care shared the Red My Lips Campaign.  Red My is a non-profit organization who runs a global campaign in the month of April.  This is a Red Lip-wearing campaign in April where supporters join together to speak out against rape myths and victim blaming, demonstrate solidarity and support for all survivors, and raise awareness and funds.  So in April if you want to raise awareness wear Red Lipstick or this gorgeous Red Lip tint by Mahalo Skin Care, whether your a man or woman, please do.

This is an amazing organization and cause, which doesn’t get nearly enough people talking about it.  The thing is we need to join together to start the conversation because likely we all know someone or are close to someone that has been affected by sexual violence.

The RED MY LIPS is a statement red, that looks so pretty on all skin types.  This is inspired by the rich velvety petals of a red rose.  You can tell all the love that goes into these beauties crafted by hand in Hawaii with moisturizing oils, natural waxes, and collagen amino acids infusion to promote a flattering red pucker.  For a full list of ingredients click here.  Not only does this tint have staying power, it is smooth and hydrating on lips and smells divine with hints of vanilla, rose and Hawaiian jasmine.  I have fair to light skin and think it looks brilliant with the balance of red and notes of orange and pink.  I feel feminine and confident in this beauty and proud to wear my Red lip tint.  Definitely sexy.

Just look at  the signature bamboo case and vegan brush.   Love the details and that it is eco-chic, refillable.  The bamboo case even has a mirror.  Pure luxury.  I must tell you that even the red box it comes in is sexy and thought provoking.   The inside of the box reminds us:

YOUR [beauty][sexuality][power] IS YOURS!

GPB Red My Lips 2

I found that a little goes a long way and for a stronger/deeper red I just need to add more.  Mahalo Skin Care does say there might be gentle tingling from the plumping infusion of collagen amino acids-not sure if I feel this.   I’m not too keen on selfies but for a cause like this, I will proudly post and share my Red My Lips.  What about you?

GPB Mahalo Red My Lips

Remember to share your beautiful red lip by posting your photos and tag and @redmylipsorg with #RedMyLips and #ok2share

What’s so exciting is that The Red My Lips lip tint will permanently be available in the Mahalo Skin Care shop and a percentage of sales will continue to go to    I would highly recommend this gorgeous clean beauty.   Such a great cause and product.  I can’t wait to see your Red My Lips.  Get your Mahalo Skin Care Red My Lips Tint here.

Legislation/Take Action

#CleanBeautyRevolution Au Naturale Cosmetics

GPB Cleanbeautyrevolution

The #CleanBeautyRevolution is here and it’s about time.  For over 70 years the cosmetic industry has basically had limited restrictions on what ingredients, including harmful chemicals they put into our personal care products.  Au Naturale Cosmetics has been on a mission to make our products safe and we all can be part of it by signing the #CleanBeautyLobby.  Au Naturale is asking law makers to make cosmetics safe by creating a CLEAN BEAUTY STANDARD.  This Standard will protect us, the consumers, by demanding stricter legislation to monitor the cosmetic industry and clear, transparent labeling of beauty products in the United States.

Why is this so important?  Think about all the products you see on the market labeled “natural”, “organic” and “green”  that aren’t really what they say they are.  Why?  Great question- because there is not a legal definition for these terms when it comes to the cosmetic industry.  I must admit I’ve been fooled by these product labels, thinking I was buying natural safe products only to find out they had all the harmful ingredients that could be linked to health concerns.

Many people believe that if the product is out on the market, the product is safe and if labeled natural, organic or green that it truly is.  However, this is not true.  First, most would think we shouldn’t even have to worry about this, our products should just be safe period.   Second, most consumers would believe if there are certain labels on our products like organic, natural or green then they would have to meet those standards.  But, our products aren’t all safe, labels are ambiguous and the cosmetic industry is in a world all their own.

In the United States, the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act(FD&C Act) and the Fair Packaging and Labeling Act (FPLA), does not have authority to require companies to test their products for safety.  Also, with the exception of color additives there are only a few prohibited substances that cosmetics companies can’t use.  There are about 10 ingredients banned in the United States, where the European Union (EU) has banned more than 1,000 ingredients.

So why is the US so different from the EU in the cosmetic industry?  More to that story later, the point now is, we as consumers have the right to safe products and clear labeling.  So what can we do?

If you want safer, stricter regulations for the cosmetic industry please join the #CleanBeautyRevolution by signing Au Naturale cosmetics CLEAN BEAUTY LOBBY petition on  We can all take action by spreading the word to our family, friends, co-workers and anyone that will listen.  Also, Au Naturale Cosmetics is inviting everyone to join the Clean Beauty Revolution by spreading the word via social media using hashtags #CleanBeautyRevolution and #CleanBeautyLobby to support the movement.  Au Naturale is planning on sitting down with Congress soon, Spring 2016, so let’s all stand together and demand safer products and stricter legislation to monitor the cosmetic industry.

GPB lobby

So what are you waiting for?  Go sign the petition at now if you haven’t already.  When I reached out to the Au Naturale Team they let me know their goal is at least 10k signatures by mid April.  Help support the #CleanBeautyRevolution and sign the #CleanBeautyLobby and share on social media.  For more details please also go to

Let’s make a difference together.

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world.  Indeed it is the only thing that ever has.

Microbead ban and the Beauty Industry- Are we one step closer to safer products?

Are we one step closer to safer products with the Microbead ban?  Hopefully, but at least President Obama signing the ban against Microbeads is a step.  You may be asking what are these Microbeads and what’s the big deal with this law?  Let’s start with the law (boring for some and exciting for others) this is considered a bipartisan law, H.R.1321-114th Congress (2015-2016) and amends the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act to prohibit the manufacture and introduction or delivery for introduction into interstate commerce of rinse-off cosmetics contacting intentionally added plastic microbeads.  What?

The bill was enacted to protect the nation’s waterway by banning the plastic particles called microbeads commonly found in our products like body scrubs, body washes and even toothpaste.  To be more specific, the bill defines Microbeads as:

“plastic-microbead-any solid plastic particle that is less than five millimeters in size and is intended to be used to exfoliate or cleanse the human body or any part thereof; and the term “rinse-off” cosmetic includes toothpaste.”

According to 5Gyres research, a single product can contain as many as 350,000 polyethylene or polypropylene microbeads – that’s crazy!  These microbeads are tiny plastic beads that exfoliate and are meant to slough off excess skin cells to smooth skin, help wipe away oil and dirt from the skin and teeth.  These microbeads  are made to wash down drains but they are NOT biodegradable so they end up in our lakes, rivers and oceans.

So you can see why microbeads may pose a threat to the environment because they are made out of plastic which can’t dissolve.  Specifically, the microbeads wash down drains into our waters harming the environment and the animals that live there and us.  Microbeads can be ingested by animals/organisms that live in our waters because the shape and size of the microbeads resemble the food they eat.  So one might say why not clean up the microbeads, not ban them, but they are so small in size clean up by water filtration is nearly impossible.  Therefore, by July 1, 2017, companies will have to eliminate the use of microbeads in personal care, cleansing and exfoliating products.  For a list of products that most likely contain microbeads see the list the International Campaign Against Microbeads in Cosmetics has compiled.

Until the microbead ban is effective, make sure to read labels and look to avoid products that contain polyethylene and polypropylenepolyethylene terphtahlate, polymethyl methacrylate, polylactic acid or nylon.  Plus you can shop for alternatives that are already out on the market, companies that don’t use plastic microbeads in their products.  These products use natural exfoliates like shells and natural waxes (coconut shell and jojoba), ground rice, salt, sugar, almonds and coffee beans.

This is great for our environment and hopefully a step we need to raise awareness that our laws or really lack of laws regulating the beauty industry need to be fixed.  This law is movement in the right direction for making our products safer.   Scientists showed through research that the microbeads are harming the environment and lawmakers were able to come together and decide to ban the microbeads.  This is important, because one day hopefully all the research and lobbying by Groups and Companies like The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, The Breast Cancer Fund, Au Naturale Cosmetics Campaign Clean Beauty Lobby, and Beauty Counter will help get laws passed for safer products.  We as consumers have the right to know ingredients that are in our products.  One would think all of these products that are available on the market are safe, but that’s part of the issue.

Although, this legislation is a great step in the right direction for safer products, until we have stricter regulations we as consumers vote for products and companies with every purchase we make.

Dr. Brite Peroxide Free Teeth Whitening Pen Green Apple

GPB Dr. Brite

First, let me start by saying I’m a coffee drinker, actually I’m obsessed with coffee (at least 2 cups a day) and tea (black or green) so my teeth were in need of some help in the whitening department.  Second, I found the help I needed to make my teeth pearly white with the Dr. Brite Peroxide Free Teeth Whitening Pen in Green Apple.  More on that below.  I was so happy to see the Dr. Brite pen in the Organic Bunny Box , one of the best safe subscription beauty boxes that I would suggest getting and also suggest following Amanda of the Organic Bunny on instagram and her blog for valuable information about safe and toxic products-alright I can go on and on about her and you’re probably already following her so let’s move on to Dr. Brite.

Dr. Brite’s products were created from a passion and vision to make the world a less chemically toxic place.  The Dr. Brite brand evolved because two sisters, Pooneh, a practicing dentist, and Paris, a cancer surgeon combined their professional experience to create health and beauty products that are safe, effective, and naturally good for you.”  They knew that the conventional products available to all of us contained toxic chemicals that have been linked to cancer, inflammation, mouth sores, hormone disruption and other harm to our bodies. This is why Dr. Brite promises to be a “100% Natural Product Line, All the Time.”

Also, for every purchase of Dr. Brite products they give products free of harmful ingredients to people in need, fund their grassroots educational programs teaching children and adults about the importance of oral hygiene and to be aware of harmful ingredients found in everyday products, and donate a portion of profits to plant trees and reforest our planet.  Wow! Amazing ladies and products that I want to support.  Now for the results-A picture is worth a thousand words:

Before and After Results: (~3 weeks use- I can’t believe I’m sharing pictures of my teeth, but how else can I show you the results?)

GPB dr. brite before and after

Before Dr. Brite (top) After Dr. Brite (bottom)

I used Dr. Brite for about 3 weeks before I took the after picture, however, I noticed results within a few days.  I wish I would have taken more pictures throughout the process, but you can still see the difference in my before and after shots above.  We must remember results may vary (don’t you just love that?), however, I’ve seen great results on instagram after people used Dr. Brite.  Also, I made sure to follow the easy directions below.

Directions:  Brush and floss teeth daily.   Use Dr. Brite pen 2-3 times a day until gel is finished for best whitening results. Each pen is good for 20-30 treatments.  It is simple to use-click the pen until gel appears on silicone cap-use 1-2 clicks for top teeth and 1-2 clicks for bottom teeth 2-3 times a day.  For best results, they also suggest to avoid eating and drinking for 15 minutes after gel is applied.  There are a few more details on the back of the package.

I loved that it was easy to use, worked, didn’t make my teeth sensitive or hurt like other whitening methods I’ve tried before and that contained toxic chemicals in them.  The Green Apple taste is good, not overpowering and has a slight mint taste to it.  Very convenient to just apply the gel without using trays, which speaking from experience were uncomfortable and had to be worn all night (yuck) or messy strips.  Seriously, one of the best natural products I’ve tried to whiten teeth that is relatively inexpensive at $20 and it works without all those toxic ingredients.

Dr. Brite uses natural and organic ingredients in their products.   The Dr. Brite Peroxide Free Teeth Whitening Pen Green Apple ingredients include:  Purified Water, Organic Glycerin, Cellulose Gum, Xylitol, Coco Glucoside (Coconut Derived), Sodium Bicarbonate (baking soda), Asorbic Acid (Vitamin C), Organic Coconut Oil, Organic Green Apple Extract, Menthol.  They also promise to be natural and have no harmful chemicals, sulfate free, paraben free, carrageenan free, cruelty free, BPA free, Recyclable packaging and women and mom created!

Last picture I promise…

GPB Dr. Brite white

As you can see Dr. Brite really worked for me.  However, remember their packaging indicates that results may vary.  I would definitely suggest Dr. Brite’s Teeth Whitening Pen if you’re looking for a safe, free from harmful ingredients way to whiten your teeth.  I just purchased more Whitening Pens and their toothpaste and mouthwash.  I can’t wait to try more products from Dr. Brite.  If you want to try Dr. Brite then click here and please share your results.

Josh Rosebrook

I can’t say enough about Josh Rosebrook Balance Shampoo and Conditioner.  I’ve been getting so many compliments on my hair lately.  It really does matter what ingredients go into products.  Beauty Heroes described Josh Rosebrook as using an holistic approach to skin and hair care.  As a hairstyist, Josh realized the body’s ability to heal itself after he created his first product, the cacoa antioxidant face mask.  He studied plants and their capacities to restore and repair hair which lead to his hair products line.  Fueled by his passion to make people feel better, more beautiful and confident, Josh works with a team of phyto-chemists and herbalists to develop high-performing skin care and hair care formulas.

On Josh Rosebrook’s website the Balance Shampoo and Conditioner are $30 each.  So with Beauty Heroes you get both products plus sidekick Hairspray for $39 what a steal!

The Balance Shampoo and conditioning duo finely tunes all hair types to optimal balance.  It’s light weight and doesn’t leave my hair weighed down or greasy.  These are made with organic extracts of allow vera, hemp, jojoba and flax seed and many other natural ingredients.  The Balance Shampoo and Conditioner are a lightweight combination of coconut, shea, olive and meadow foam plant oils.  Also infused in these beauties are rose-hip and rose essential oils which are usually reserved for high-end face care formulas.  No wonder I really love Josh Rosebrook.

You only need to use a small amount of shampoo to cover hair and scalp so the shampoo lasts a long time.  After massaging thoroughly it can be left in the hair for 3 minutes to stimulate follicles and nourish scalp.  I only do this a few times a week, but my hair feels really soft after.  I’ve tried other natural shampoos and this is my favorite because it cleans without stripping my hair and maybe because it does feel more like what I’m used to.  I follow this by the conditioner, which should be applied mid-shaft to ends of hair, but sometimes I forget.  The conditioner can also be left on for up to three minutes,  Like a mini spa day or “spa in the shower”.  Lastly, the sidekick Hair Spray Firm Hold was a great addition to this box.  It works to control hair styles who encouraging strong hair growth.  It’s natural and it works without the sticky feeling from conventional hair sprays.

If you’re looking for non-toxic amazing hair products check out Josh Rosebrook, the Balance Shampoo and Conditioner is my favorite so far.  I would also recommend Beauty Heroes, it’s such a great way to explore the green beauty world and get safe non-toxic products that are expert tested and really work.
